Terms of Service

1. These terms
By using Live Trains, on the web or in the iOS app, you agree to these terms. If you do not, please do not use it. Live Trains is operated by an individual based in the United Kingdom, referred to below as “we”.
2. What the information can and cannot be relied on for
This is the most important section on the page, so it is near the top.
Live Trains is not an official source and must not be relied on for anything that matters. The times, platforms, delays, cancellations and formations you see come from third-party feeds. They can be late, incomplete, or simply wrong, and the railway itself changes faster than any feed reports it.
Specifically, please do not use it as your only source when:
- catching a last train, or any service you cannot afford to miss;
- making a tight connection, especially one involving another operator;
- standing on a platform deciding whether a train is yours. Platform numbers change at short notice and the station’s own displays are authoritative;
- planning anything where a missed train has a cost, such as a flight, a hospital appointment or an exam.
The screens and announcements at the station, and the operator’s own information, always take priority over anything shown here. We do not accept liability for a train missed, a connection lost, a ticket wasted or a journey disrupted because of information shown in Live Trains.
Where a piece of information is not known, the app is built to say so rather than guess. That is deliberate, and a blank or an “unknown” is a real answer rather than a fault.
3. Who we are not
Live Trains is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of National Rail, Network Rail, Rail Delivery Group, or any train operating company. Operator names and logos are used only to identify whose service a train is.
Train information is provided by Realtime Trains and by the Rail Data Marketplace, and is used under their terms. Map data is supplied by Esri. Those sources own their data; we present it.
4. The service
Live Trains is free, and there is no paid tier. It is offered as-is and as-available. We do not promise it will be up, that it will be correct, or that it will keep existing. It is run by one person on a small server, and it may be slow, briefly unavailable, or changed without notice.
We may add, change or remove features at any time. If we ever shut the service down, we will give account holders reasonable notice by email so that anything you care about can be exported first.
5. Accounts
You do not need an account. Searching, boards, the map and station pages all work signed out, and that is not going to change. An account exists so that favourites, saved routes and settings follow you between devices.
- You are responsible for keeping your password and your two-factor recovery codes safe. Anyone holding them can reach your account.
- Give an email address you actually control. Sign-in links and codes go there, and it is the address an export is sent to.
- One person, one account. Do not create accounts in bulk or on behalf of someone else.
- Tell us at privacy@liverailway.co.uk if you think somebody else has got into your account.
You can delete your account at any time from Account, then Privacy and data. We may suspend or remove an account that is being used to abuse the service, and we will say why unless doing so would defeat the point.
6. Fair use
There is no rate card and no API key, which relies on people being reasonable. Please do not:
- scrape the service in bulk, or use it as a free backend for another product. The upstream feeds have quotas we have to live inside, and one heavy user takes the service down for everyone;
- work around rate limits, sign-in throttling or any other control, including by spreading requests across addresses or accounts;
- try to reach accounts, data or parts of the system that are not yours;
- resell the information, or present it as your own or as official;
- use it for anything unlawful, or in a way that interferes with anyone else using it.
If you want to build something on this data, go to Realtime Trains and the Rail Data Marketplace directly. They are the source, they are open to developers, and they will give you terms we cannot.
7. Ownership
The software, design, wording and branding of Live Trains belong to us. The train and station data belongs to its respective sources. Nothing in these terms gives you rights over either, beyond using the service as intended.
Anything you put in, such as your favourites and your settings, stays yours. We store it in order to give it back to you on your other devices, and for nothing else.
8. Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of Live Trains. That includes missed trains, missed connections, wasted tickets, late arrivals and any knock-on cost, and it includes loss of data.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are using Live Trains as a consumer, these terms do not affect your statutory rights.
9. Changes to these terms
These terms may change. The date at the top changes with them, and a material change will be emailed to account holders rather than appearing quietly. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept it.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the United Kingdom, you may bring proceedings in your own courts.
